When Your NYSLRS or NYSTRS Pension Is Paid

Both of New York’s large public retirement systems pay at the end of the month, but they do not pay on the same day, and one of them mails a paper check before the direct deposit lands. The 2026 dates for both are below, with the rule that produces them.

The rule and the dates

The rule, for each system

NYSLRS states it this way: “Your pension payment will be deposited directly into your bank account on the last business day of each month and available to you immediately,” and “your pension payment check will be mailed on the second-to-last business day of each month.” NYSTRS states it this way: “Your retirement benefit is paid in 12 monthly payments, directly deposited into your checking or savings account on the last business day of each month.”

NYSLRS, both ERS and PFRSLast business day of the monthMailed on the second-to-last business day
NYSTRSLast business day of the monthSame date as the direct deposit
NYSLRS publishes one calendar covering both the Employees’ Retirement System and the Police and Fire Retirement System. There is no separate mid-month date for police and fire members.

Because both rules are written in business days rather than in calendar dates, a weekend or a holiday moves the payment earlier on its own. Neither system needs a separate weekend rule and neither publishes one.

NYSLRS has published only January, February and March of 2027 so far: 28 and 29 January, 25 and 26 February, 30 and 31 March. The rest of 2027 is not out yet.

First payment and problems

The first payment is the one that looks wrong

The two systems differ on which month the first payment covers, and this is where most of the confusion starts.

NYSTRS pays at the end of the month you retire in, and says plainly what that means: “if your retirement date is later than the first of the month and you receive your first payment at the end of the month you retired, your first payment will reflect only the days you were retired, not a full month of pay.” A first payment that looks roughly half the expected size is usually a half month, not an error.

NYSLRS says something different: “for most members, you will receive your first pension payment at the end of the month that follows the month in which you retired.” So the first NYSLRS payment usually arrives a month later than a NYSTRS member would expect. NYSLRS does not say in its published guidance which month a given payment covers, and we are not going to fill that gap with a guess. If the amount matters for a specific month, ask NYSLRS directly and get the answer in writing.

Both systems can also combine the first two payments into one if the application arrives close to the retirement date. A single larger deposit in month two is a normal outcome, not a correction.

If a payment does not arrive

  • Check with the bank before checking with the system. A deposit that has been sent can still be pending on the bank’s side, and the systems cannot see that.
  • Do not close the old account until two payments have landed in the new one. A direct deposit change usually takes a full cycle to take effect, and a payment sent to a closed account has to be returned and reissued.
  • If a paper check has not arrived, allow for the mailing date rather than the deposit date. With NYSLRS those are different days.
  • Report a change of address to the system itself, not only to the post office. Forwarding expires.

Common questions

Do the dates move if the last business day is a holiday?

Yes, and automatically. Both rules count business days, so a holiday at the end of a month pulls the payment to the previous working day without any announcement.

Are these dates the same every year?

No. They move with the calendar, which is why both systems publish a fresh calendar each year rather than a standing rule with dates. Check the current year before relying on a date more than a few months out.

Does a pension payment date affect anything else?

It can. A payment that lands on 31 December rather than 2 January falls in a different tax year, and a year with an extra payment in it can change a taxable income figure enough to matter for the Medicare income-related surcharge two years later. Neither New York system has that problem in 2026. New Jersey does, which is worth knowing if you or a spouse draws from both states.
