There is no Social Security calculator here on purpose. The Social Security Administration runs one on your actual earnings record, which is better than anything that could be built from figures you type in.
Social Security: use theirs, not ours
We do not publish a Social Security calculator, because the Social Security Administration already runs one on your actual earnings record, and it provides the most accurate information.
Your my Social Security account shows your own statement and estimates your benefit at every claiming age from your real earnings history. It takes a few minutes to set up and it is the figure everything else should be checked against.
If you would rather not sign in, the Social Security Quick Calculator gives a rough estimate from your date of birth and current earnings, with no account needed. Social Security describes those estimates as rough, and they are.
What neither tool decides for you is when to claim, and for a married couple that question turns on the spousal and survivor rules more than on the individual figure. That is covered on the Social Security claiming page.
Where to go instead
Why we point you at theirs
A benefit estimate is only as good as the earnings history behind it. The SSA has yours. A calculator on this site would ask you to estimate your own earnings and would then return a worse answer with more confidence.
The version this site used to carry computed one worker’s own benefit at whole ages, with no spousal benefit, no survivor benefit, no taxation of benefits and no earnings test. For a married couple the spousal and survivor interaction is the claiming decision, so a tool that omits it is not a simplification, it is the wrong tool.
What neither tool decides
Both the SSA estimator and any other will tell you what a benefit is at a given age. Neither tells you when to claim. That turns on the survivor benefit, on whether one of you has a public pension, on the tax treatment of the benefit alongside your other income, and on how long you each expect to live. Those are covered on the Social Security page.
Check this against your own numbers.
The claiming decision turns on the survivor benefit and the tax interaction, neither of which an estimator answers. We can cover it in a short conversation, at no charge and with no obligation.
